SA Schools Sport Volleyball Day One : Match Reports – Boys u17: KZN v Free State

Tournament favourites, KZN U17 boys’ team were oozing with confidence when they squared up
against the Free State in their second encounter on day one of the National Schools Volleyball
Championship hosted at the Belhar Sport Centre in Belville, Cape Town.

KZN skipper, Deloshen Valaitham was in sparkling form as he led his team’s onslaught against the
Free State team. KZN setter, Ayush Maharaj had a field day servicing his attack force to post a
runaway 6-0 lead in double quick time. Free State attackers were kept at bay when KZN’s tall middle
blocker Karl Bosfeld stood strong in defence at the net. KZN romped home with a crushing 25-7 first
set win thrashing.

Continuing with their winning ways, KZN wrapped up proceedings with a 25-11 win in the 2 nd set.
The KZN team will play their final round robin match against the highly fancied Limpopo team on
Tuesday.

The much publicised clash against Western Cape u17 boys team against Gauteng drew a large crowd
of spectators who waited to witness a gigantic struggle between the two rivals.

Sadly, the encounter turned out to be a ‘damp squib’ as it failed to live up to the crowd’s
expectations. Over reliance on using the soft touches and ‘dumping’ instead of playing the hard
driven ball disappointed the fans.

Sparks of brilliance was witnessed on the odd occasion by W.Cape’s Jayden Cupido, Analo Kotsana
and Natan Lekweri. Gauteng’s Andile Mncube impressed as a blocker. If Andile had the full support
of his team mates things could have panned out differently for Gauteng who went on to lose the
match by a 25-17; 25-17 score line.
